This is a picture of a movie theater for African-Americans. It was taken by Dorothea Lange in June 1937, in Leland, Mississippi. This is an outdoor shot of Rex's movie theater, during the day. It appears to be in an urban area. There are no people in this picture. The sign is the first thing I noticed about this picture. There are 3 brick buildings in this picture, one being the theater, another being an electric company, and a third, undefined one. All of them are close together, and probably are very close to many other buildings. This is a very negative picture, as it shows the segrigation in America at the time. If I could ask the photographer two questions, one would be how they had felt taking the picture. The second would be about the rest of the town. Was it all so blatently segregated; was their any place for everyone? -Matt
This is a picture of a sign in a beer parlor window stating that they would not sell beer to Indians. It was taken by John Vachon in September 1939, in Sisseton, South Dakota. The photo is taken from the outside, but shows the inside of the store. It looks like its in an urban area, taken during the day. There is no people in this picture, except for a man in the window. You can't see much of him. There is the beer parlor in this picture, but no other buildings. I suspect that there is more buildings surrounding this one. This is a very negative picture, as it shows the rasicism in America at the time. If I could ask the photographer two questions, one would be why did you take this picture; to show the rasicm, or another reason. I would also ask how they felt taking this picture. -Matt
This is a picture of a bus station sign in Rome, Georgia. It was taken on September 1943, by Esther Bubley. It is at a railroad station, so I suspect that this picture is in an urban area. There are no people in this picture. There are two buildings in this picture. There is probably tracks and trains near this sign. It is a negative picture, decipting the rasicm and segrigation in America at the time of the picture. If I could ask the photographer two questions, one would be how they felt when taking this picture. Another would be the difference between the two waiting rooms- was the white one nicer than the African-American one? -Matt

This is a picture of a cabin off to the side of the road, and if you could see the sigh reads " Barzella inn, cabins for colored."
The cabins for colored people were to the side of the road and not that nice at all, there home was not comfortable and yet not even livable it looked like a beat down shack, but they had to stay in them when they had no where else to say. So they stayed in cabins like the one in the picture ( the one in the picture is actually nicer than most ones. )

ashley_color_waiting_room.jpg
You see the gentlemen waiting for the bus, but they werent allowed to wait with other white people they had a waiting room where they had to go and wait for their bus. Sometimes they bus wouldnt even stop for them, it would just continue on because they driver didnt want to be know for driving people of color.
You could tell its early day and already the buses are packed, because the people are trying to get to so many different pleaces but its so hard because there few buses and many people.

In this photo just like the next you could see the white waiting room, they didnt want to be in the same room as people with color so they had their own waiting room as weel. You see the people with buisness suits and all dressed up with plenty of buses waiting to get on.
From the picture you could see that they are wealthy and they live life good, they dont worry women stay home and look pretty while men are hard working and making tons of money. The people of color wished that they could have the same.
